The Higher Line

It is always a little amazing when I see magazine articles about the High Line.  How many people work in a  garden that actually creates a real estate market around it?

How to mis-identify a plant

I completely failed an ID the other day…walked past a corydalis, and thought it was maybe a dicentra or something.  I’m not sure we learned Corydalis solida ‘George Baker’, so maybe I don’t feel quite so bad.

Horticulture Intern @ FHL

I started my 6-month internship today at the High Line.  The day started well, with a guided tour by Piet Oudolf.  After that, we pruned winter damage and discussed the finer points of Amelanchier pruning.

red-tailed hawk & internships

This afternoon I was working on cover letters to go to various internships, when I noticed a red-tailed hawk sitting on the fire escape railing.  New York City can be pretty amazing.

School starts again tomorrow

We have had the past 2 weeks off for summer break.  Couple that with working in the Nolen for 3 weeks, and I haven’t really seen anyone else except for Luis for over a month…which all ends tomorrow with the start of Disease ID class.

Over the break, I went to Massachusetts and ate a great dinner at the Herb Lyceum, visited friends in Vermont, and stayed in a yurt in Maine.  While in Maine, I visited the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller garden and Garland Farm of Beatrix Farrand fame.  I also stopped by Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island.  Photos are coming, and hopefully I’ll get permission to post the Abby Aldrich photos soon.

My Citizen Pruners Cap!

Joe Bernardo handing me my Citizens Pruner cap

Here is a picture of me getting my Citizen Pruners cap from Joe Bernardo at graduation.  I have yet to prune a single street tree in my neighborhood.  Mostly because I dread being accosted by my neighbors.  Visit treesny.com to learn more!

Nolen Greenhouses, Day 1

New rotation is working in the Nolen Greenhouses.  I’m working with Luis, and today we watered, made “G” mix, potted on Agapanthus, then pinched mums.  Quite exciting, and a much slower pace than turf and grounds.  Sharita was tieing mums to a frame that was pretty awesome to see – doing mums for the Kiku show would drive me absolutely bonkers with the detail needed.

“G” (Garbage) Mix:

5 bags pine nuggets; 2 bushels compost; 1 lb Plant Tone; 1/2 bushel perlite.

End of Turf & Grounds

Turf & Grounds rotation ended last Friday.  For the week, I deadheaded Lilacs for 1 day, then ended up using gas shears and doing Ilex hedges for several days and then just tipping some random stuff.  I also got to drive the Toro Groundmaster mower, use the Toro equivalent of a Skag, and take my skills test.  Skills test included talking a little about how to hedge, then a lot about mower maintenance which was more valuable.  Sorry to the other groups I’ve worked with – I liked T&G the best.  Weather ended with:  87, 91, 89, 89, 85.  2nd hottest july on record, by 1/10th of a degree.
