Turf & Grounds, Wk 1 Recap

I am doing my Turf & Grounds rotation for SOPH (School of Professional Horticulture) that started last Monday.   So far I’ve pruned spirea (by hand w/pruners to keep shagginess), weeded around the Lilacs, and have begun to learn how to shear hedges (harder and more time consuming than it looks to do it well).  We set up lines and first set our vertical cuts, then reset the string to get the right height – most of this is also done by hand with shears.   It was also very hot and humid with 2 days in the mid ’90’s which was another challenge.  Luckily, I’m fully powered by Salvia hispanica…the ancient superfood we know as Chia.

JULY. Water, weeds, and wanderlust are the chief problems…

…cope with the first two, compromise with the third.
